Air New Zealand has launched its new direct Christchurch to Rarotonga service, giving South Islanders a non-stop connection to the Cook Islands for the winter season.
The inaugural flight departed Christchurch earlier this week, with the seasonal route operating up to three times a week through to late October.
The service follows last week’s announcement of three additional international Air New Zealand routes from Christchurch Airport.
Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson says the Cook Islands route strengthens the airport’s growing international network.
“Rarotonga has long been a favourite destination for South Islanders, and this new direct service makes getting there easier than ever,” Justin says.
“Travellers can leave Christchurch in the afternoon and be enjoying tropical temperatures, island hospitality and dinner by the beach that same evening.”
Focus on South Island travellers
Air New Zealand general manager short haul Lucy Hall says the route forms part of the airline’s focus on improving connectivity for South Island travellers.
“It’s fantastic to see our inaugural Christchurch to Rarotonga service taking off today, and it’s part of our focus to create more choice and convenience for our South Island customers,” Lucy says.
Lucy says the route is expected to appeal strongly to families looking for simpler travel options during winter.
“Our new direct Christchurch-Rarotonga service gives people an easier way to swap winter layers for island time, and we know it will be particularly popular with families travelling with children where we know seamless travel with fewer stops is important,” Lucy says.
Seasonal service
The route will add about 19,600 seats between Christchurch and the Cook Islands during the season.
Flights will operate up to three times weekly between May 26 and October 24.
Tuesday and Saturday services depart Christchurch at 3.20pm, while Thursday services depart at 2.20pm.
Return services from Rarotonga arrive in Christchurch during the early hours of Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings.
