Hotel Council Aotearoa has confirmed plans to recruit its first executive director as the organisation expands its role within New Zealand’s tourism and hospitality sector.
The newly created position reflects the organisation’s growth into a national industry body representing about 250 hotels alongside owners, operators, brands and sector partners.
HCA strategic director James Doolan says the appointment marks the next stage of development for the organisation.
“HCA has built strong momentum over the past few years, growing both its membership base and its impact on key policy and industry issues,” James says.
“This new role allows us to scale that work further — strengthening our advocacy, deepening member engagement and continuing to build a high-performing, sustainable organisation.”
Leadership and advocacy focus
The executive director will oversee the organisation’s performance, advocacy work and stakeholder engagement while working alongside the board and strategic director to deliver HCA’s priorities.
The role will also include acting as the hotel sector’s primary spokesperson, alongside responsibilities around membership growth, revenue and government engagement.
James says he will remain in his current role as strategic director.
“I’ll continue to focus on strategic direction, policy and industry positioning, while partnering closely with the executive director as they take on day-to-day leadership of the organisation,” James says.
“This is an exciting opportunity for a senior leader who wants to play a central role in shaping the future of New Zealand’s hotel industry.”
Recruitment underway
The recruitment process is being managed by Jackson Stone & Partners, with principal consultant Nikki Franklin leading the search.
HCA represents the hotel sector on issues including regulation, taxation, workforce and tourism policy settings.
