More than 2400 public nominations have been used to compile the Iconic Auckland Eats 2026 Top 100 dishes, highlighting the food Aucklanders return to across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
The annual programme, led by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited in partnership with Restaurant Hub, focuses on dishes rather than venues, reflecting everyday dining habits.
Loyalty and change reflected
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited says 79 dishes are new to this year’s Top 100, including 31 from venues that have featured previously.
A small number of dishes have remained consistent, with Depot Eatery & Oyster Bar fish sliders and Sugar at Chelsea Bay raspberry lamingtons appearing in the list every year since it began.
Other returning favourites include dishes from Carmel, Bar Magda, Giapo, The Local Waiheke, East and Lot Nineteen.
Food as identity and visitor draw
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited director of destination Annie Dundas says the list reflects how people connect with the city through food.
“These are the dishes people come back to because they carry memory and meaning – where whānau gather, friendships form, and visitors are welcomed.
“When travellers are seeking out local cuisine to understand a place, this list offers an authentic snapshot of the dishes Aucklanders genuinely love.”
Auckland mayor Wayne Brown says the programme highlights the importance of the hospitality sector.
“These businesses bring people together every day and play a vital role in Auckland’s vibrancy and economy.”
Accessible and diverse offering
Restaurant Hub says the list reflects a balance between familiarity and innovation, with diners continuing to support trusted venues while trying new dishes.
Around two-thirds of the Top 100 dishes fall within the low to mid-price range, spanning neighbourhood eateries and destination dining.
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited says the diversity of dishes reflects Auckland’s multicultural communities and the role food plays in connection and belonging.
The Top 100 was judged by a panel including Tātaki Auckland Unlimited head of tourism Karen Thompson-Smith, hospitality industry expert Connie Clarkson and Restaurant Hub co-owner Mark Gregory.
