Auckland Airport processed 18.9 million passengers during the 2025 calendar year, but a sizeable share of Auckland’s rental vehicle activity is occurring away from the airport at suburban branches.
According to figures cited by NZRAC, demand is being driven by local businesses, residents needing temporary transport, and visitors already staying across the wider Auckland region.
The company says Auckland’s spread-out geography and multiple commercial centres mean airport and CBD branches do not capture all rental demand.
South Auckland business demand
NZRAC says South Auckland’s commercial and logistics corridor is generating steady business hire demand, particularly around Manukau and East Tāmaki.
Corporate customers often use suburban locations for client visits, site inspections and staff transport between workplaces.
The company says local collection can also appeal by avoiding airport surcharges and reducing travel time to the terminal precinct.
Manukau remains a key growth area due to its proximity to industrial zones and motorway access.
North Shore convenience factor
NZRAC says Auckland’s North Shore is another strong suburban market, with residents and businesses seeking local vehicle access without crossing the harbour into the CBD.
According to IBISWorld figures cited by NZRAC, New Zealand’s car rental industry includes 682 businesses nationwide.
The company says suburban branch networks are becoming increasingly important alongside traditional airport and city-centre outlets.
North Shore users are often motivated by convenience, avoiding Harbour Bridge congestion and central city parking costs.
Diverse urban demand
NZRAC says providers such as NZRAC maintain dedicated branches in both Manukau and the North Shore to serve Auckland’s distinct local markets.
The company says business travel, replacement vehicle needs and weekend leisure trips continue to support strong suburban rental demand across New Zealand’s largest city.
