New Zealand’s new visa-free travel pathway for eligible Chinese and Pacific travellers holding Australian visas is already delivering a tourism boost, with more than 13,000 visitors arriving within the scheme’s first month.
Immigration Minister Erica Stanford says strong early uptake showed the policy was supporting economic growth and strengthening the tourism sector.
“Our immigration settings play a critical role in strengthening our country’s economic future. New Zealand is a dream destination for people around the world, and it’s encouraging to see this level of interest just one month after the changes were introduced,” Stanford says.
“More visitors benefit Kiwi businesses and help grow our economy.”
Officials report more than 24,000 New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) applications have already been approved for the pathway, adding to an estimated 240,000 annual visitors from China and the Pacific Islands.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says the early results were positive for the tourism industry and regional economies nationwide.
“As our second largest export, tourism is vital to New Zealand, and these changes are supporting businesses right across the country,” Upston says.
The South Island has been a particular beneficiary, with 43 per cent of arrivals entering through Christchurch and 22 per cent through Queenstown, highlighting the importance of regional gateways in capturing international visitor growth.
Upston says additional arrivals were already translating into increased activity across the sector.
“More visitors means more accommodation bookings, more tours, and more people dining in our restaurants and cafés. It’s a real boost for jobs and regional economies.”
With the upcoming Chinese New Year travel period, Upston encourages visitors to consider adding New Zealand to their itineraries.
“It’s easier than ever to include New Zealand in travel plans now. Thousands have already taken up the opportunity to experience our warm hospitality, world-class cuisine and stunning landscapes.”
