Invercargill Airport is embarking on a strategic terminal upgrade designed to ensure the airport remains compliant with aviation security screening requirements while enhancing key passenger areas to improve the customer experience.
This upgrade is a practical investment in Southland’s future, with a total project cost of $4 million. Focused on meeting modern aviation standards and accommodating growing demand for jet services, the works include upgrades to security systems for cabin baggage screening, expanded jet lounge, smarter passenger flow management, and improvements within the existing terminal footprint.
These changes are designed to maintain seamless operations while positioning the airport to provide jet services with greater efficiency.
CEO Stuart Harris says the project is not a luxury redevelopment but a vital step forward for the region.
“This is a compliance-driven functional upgrade, but it’s also an unmistakable indicator of Southland’s momentum. We’re affirming confidence in our region’s growth and ensuring Invercargill Airport can continue to connect Southlanders with Aotearoa and the world. It’s about readiness, reliability, and reflecting the pride we have in our community,” says Stuart.
To minimise any inconvenience, construction will be carefully phased to ensure the airport continues to run smoothly with minimal disruption for our customers. Regular communication will keep passengers and the wider community informed so that any potential disruptions can be mitigated and promptly addressed. Clear, timely updates will be shared at every stage of the project, which will be delivered over the next six months.
As part of the upgrade, Invercargill Airport is taking the opportunity to celebrate Southland’s identity. Through the “Postcards from the South” campaign, construction hoardings will be transformed into striking displays of regional pride, showcasing Southland’s landscapes, people, and stories.
This terminal upgrade demonstrates a clear commitment to compliance and customer service while embracing the opportunity to highlight Southland’s spirit. By investing practically today, Invercargill Airport is preparing to support Southland’s continued growth well into the future.
