Hamilton Gardens has proudly regained its Qualmark Gold Award from Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) recognizing its commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
They were first awarded a Qualmark award in 2011, and have had an independent assessment that evaluated their social, economic, environmental, and health and safety practices, which has regained their status.
It is also their first assessment since visitor fees were introduced to the Enclosed Garden and the opening of the enhanced entry precinct with elements that help enhance visitor experience.
Lucy Ryan, director of Hamilton Gardens says there is significance of cultural design elements to enhance the visitor experience. “There are several cultural design elements that have been included in the entry precinct to reflect our site’s history and create a warm and welcoming space that matches our world-class status.”
“The woven brickwork design under the sail, which represents a whaariki—a mat placed for guests during traditional Māori welcome ceremonies. This pattern echoes the sail design of the great Tainui voyaging waka (canoe) and symbolizes the gardens’ welcome to all visitors from ngaa hau e whaa (the four winds). The large vertical posts surrounding this area are inspired by traditional gardening tools called koo, forming a protective palisade around the courtyard. The connecting design symbolizes kaitiakitanga—the guardianship of Hamilton Gardens and all its guests.”
“The Tomokanga entranceway to the Enclosed Gardens features symbols sacred to Waikato Tainui. “Across the top are the seven stars of Matariki, the constellation whose midwinter appearance signifies renewal and rebirth. These symbols also remind us to be wise guardians of our inherited treasures.” says Lucy
In addition to its cultural initiatives, Hamilton Gardens’ staff play a key role in adding to visitor experiences. Lucy says “Our dedicated Front of House team receive thorough training, including maintaining positive body language and enthusiasm. Each morning the team have standup meetings to ensure everyone is informed about daily events, ensuring clear communication with visitors. We have multilingual staff to assist diverse visitors and offer free hire of wheelchairs. We also make sure the team have the opportunity to learn more about Hamilton Gardens themselves by joining a guided tour, or taking out an Audio Guide to gain a deeper insight into our special place.”
Since introducing paid entry to the Enclosed Gardens, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “We’ve continued to receive a lot of positive feedback from visitors about Hamilton Gardens. Many people appreciate the value they get for the entry fee, noting that it helps maintain the beautiful and diverse garden spaces.” says Lucy.
She says “Some have even mentioned that the fee is quite reasonable considering the quality and variety of the gardens and were surprised it had been free for so long. Overall, visitors seem to understand and support the need for an entry fee to keep help us maintain our world-class gardens.”
