Great South is taking a proactive step in their future of tourism in the Murihiku Southland region by collaborating with independent research company Angus & Associates.
This partnership aims to gather feedback from residents across the area, making sure that the development of tourism fits with community values and goals.
Amie Young, Great South destination development manager says the survey is important in understanding local opinions about tourism. She says “The survey will provide insights into how our communities feel about tourism. This includes an understanding of the positive impacts they see it brings, any adverse effects they would like to see reduced, and what growth they want to see in the future.”
The information collected from the survey will play a crucial role in informing Great South’s strategies and decisions moving forward.
“Having these insights means we can ensure community views are at the basis of all our planning for the sector and a key factor in decision making.” The findings from a similar survey conducted in early 2023 have already significantly influenced the development of the Murihiku Southland Destination Strategy 2023 – 2029, which serves as the guiding framework for local tourism initiatives.” says Amie.
The outcome of the survey is set to extend beyond immediate data gathering; it is set to shape the future of Murihiku Southland itself. Amie says “Tourism has an expansive reach into the communities of Murihiku Southland. It is a sector that has the potential to contribute to the economic, social, cultural, and environmental wellbeing of our region and residents.”
To achieve sustainable growth, the association between tourism and community benefits is key. She says “To achieve sustainable growth of our visitor economy, tourism must be closely linked to the benefits it can provide our communities.”
The insights from this research will allow Great South to understand which benefits are most valued by residents.
“With this knowledge, we can ensure any development occurs in a way that is supported by our community, and that we define success in ways that are meaningful to them.”
