In an effort to take a more holistic approach to sustainability, Tourism Industry Aotearoa announced this morning, May 10 they will be launching a new online programme called Akiaki.
Speaking from TRENZ 2024 at Wellington’s Takina Convention Centre, TIA’s chief executive, Rebecca Ingram says “Akiaki will make it easy for TIA members to learn about sustainability and business capability in tourism.”
Akiaki will be based on TIA’s Tourism Sustainability Commitment (TSC) on the four pou: Ohanga (Economic), Manuhiri (Visitor), Hapori (Community) and Te Taiao (Environment) with each module comprising of digital presentations, case studies, interactive activities and ways in which businesses can include the content into their businesses.
Rebecca says “Akiaki embodies an active ethos of proactive encouragement and guardianship.”
In the media release, May 10, she also says ” Bouncing back to 2019 is not part of our vernacular.” emphasizing that tourism as a industry needs to continue to deliver resilience and sustainability.
Akiaki adds to the 12 week courses TIA has been running with Regional Tourism Organisations to take the TSC from commitment to reality, and in turn continue to support tourism operators and help develop sustainability plans for their businesses.
Akiaki will be available for all TIA members, with modules set to be rolled out later in 2024.
