Envy Experiences leading the way in Sustainable Tourism.

With the stunning Milford Sounds as their backdrop, a private guided tour company, Envy Experiences, is setting a new standard in sustainable tourism with electric vehicles.

Recently obtaining a “climate positive” certification by Ekos, an organisation dedicated to helping businesses reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Envy Experiences is not just offsetting their carbon footprint but exceeding it.

Owner, Nigel Humphries has taken an innovative approach to sustainability. We’re not just looking at sustainability; we’re acting on it.” Nigel says.

“in 2023, we began the process with Ekos, and this year we’re taking it even further, expanding our efforts across the South.”

The company’s commitment to the environment is evident in their choice of transportation – a fleet of Tesla electric cars.  Nigel says “Five years ago, we decided to do something different, something better. “Using electric cars was a key part of our vision.”

But it’s not just about the cars. Envy Experiences operates from a home office, part of their motel business, which significantly reduces their operational costs and emissions.

“About 80% of our electricity is renewable.” says Nigel. “We’ve looked at every aspect of our operations to ensure we’re as sustainable as possible.”

This year, Envy Experiences is going a step further with plans on finding out just how much electricity their Tesla’s use and finding ways to offset even more emissions, encouraged also by the easy process through Ekos.

“It’s surprisingly straightforward for a small business like ours.” says Nigel.

Passionate about encouraging other businesses to take similar steps, Nigel says big or small, every business can look into their carbon emissions.

“It’s about the approach you take. For us, it’s been a journey of continuous improvement and commitment.”

The timing couldn’t be better. With the rise of eco-conscious travellers, especially from markets like the United States and Europe, Envy Experiences is well-positioned to cater to this growing demographic.

“Our clients are increasingly interested in sustainable options. They want to know the impact of their travel choices.”

He believes that small businesses have an advantage in this area. “It’s actually easier for small businesses to be sustainable than large corporations. There are fewer factors to monitor, making the process more manageable.”

As Nigel sees it, it’s not just a business strategy, but a journey towards sustainability and keeping it sustainable.

“It’s a positive story all around – for us, for our clients, and for the environment.”
