Overseas visitor arrivals were up by 700 to 8600 in September 2020, compared with August 2020, says data released by Stats NZ.
In the last six months, April to September 2020, there were 27,700 visitor arrivals, down 1.4 million compared to the same six months in 2019.
The main source countries during this period were Australia, United Kingdom, United States and China. Arrivals from other countries were led by India and Canada.
Overseas visitors are people who usually reside overseas and include both New Zealand citizens and non-New Zealand citizens.
Overseas visitor arrivals were down by 253,200 to 8600 in September 2020, compared with September 2019. The biggest changes were in arrivals from Australia (down 128,500) and China (down 27,300).
The number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip in September 2020 was down by 600 to 2700, compared with August 2020.
In the last six months, April to September 2020, there were 20,300 New Zealand resident arrivals, down 1.6 million compared to the same six months in 2019. The main source countries were Australia, India, China, United States, and the United Kingdom. Arrivals from other countries were led by the Philippines.
In some months, New Zealand residents returned to New Zealand on repatriation flights, operating as part of the international response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip in September 2020 was down by 277,000 to 2700, compared with September 2019. The biggest changes were in New Zealand residents arriving from Australia (down 107,400), United States (21,100), and Fiji (down 19,300).
In the September 2020 year compared with the September 2019 year, the number of visitor arrivals was 2.17 million, down by 1.73 million. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:
- Australia (down 726,100)
- China (down 251,400)
- United States (down 128,300)
- United Kingdom (down 61,300).
In the September 2020 year compared with the September 2019 year, the number of New Zealand-resident traveller arrivals was 1.43 million, down by 1.64 million. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:
- Australia (down 644,300)
- Fiji (down 123,400)
- United States (down 120,100)
- United Kingdom (down 78,900).
