COVID-19 update – total nationwide cases at 48

Today, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield confirmed that the total active COVID-19 cases has jumped to 48, with 12 new cases confirmed and one probable case under investigation.

Five cases are in Auckland, 18 in Counties Manukau, two in the Waikato and five in Waitemata. There are also an additional 19 cases in managed isolation.

A total of 30 cases are directly linked to the community outbreak.

The government will make a call on whether to change the current alert levels at 5.30pm tonight.

Regular testing of staff at the border was already underway, Dr Bloomfield said in the 1pm COVID-19 livestream. A new order makes testing a reqirement under the current circumstances after issues were raised around voluntary vs compulsory testing.

No staff have reportedly declined testing.

Minister of Health Chris Hipkins said in the 1pm COVID update that this is a difficult time for all front line workers including airport staff, police, health care workers.

"Please be patient, please be kind, these people are working exceptionally hard to provide New Zealanders with the care and support that they deserve."
