Christchurch’s much-loved International Antarctic Centre is re-opening its doors tomorrow and anticipates strong local support as Cantabrians embrace post-COVID tourism related opportunities.
International Antarctic Centre general manager Todd Schmidt says there has been a steady and welcomed stream of enquiries regarding whether the Centre would re-open, and this interest has helped to bring the decision to re-open forward.
“COVID-19 has provided obvious challenges, but within these, an opportunity to re-align our business to focus on those who share our backyard,” says Todd.
“Christchurch is one of only five cities worldwide considered an official Gateway to Antarctica, and this is an important chance for us to re-ignite Christchurch’s pride in the strong connections we have with the icey continent.
“Our reason for being is to open peoples’ hearts and minds to the critical importance of Antarctica, to ensure its ongoing protection. Cantabrians have such a vital role to play as ambassadors and this is the perfect opportunity to educate and inspire," says Todd.
The International Antarctic Centre is opening this Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend from 9am until 4.30pm and thereafter Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9am until 4.30pm.
