Nelson Marina will officially mark the completion of its Travel Lift Runway Renewal Project with a blessing ceremony on Monday September 7 2026, celebrating a significant investment in the future of the region’s marine industry.
The project has delivered new travel lift runways and supporting infrastructure that will enable the marina’s new 110-tonne travel lift to enter service, substantially increasing vessel lifting capability and supporting the continued growth of marine services in Nelson.
The blessing ceremony will be led by local kaumātua and attended by project partners, iwi representatives, elected officials, marina stakeholders, contractors and members of the wider marine community.
Nelson Marina chief executive officer, Drew Hayes, said the project represents a major step forward for both Nelson Marina and the wider top of the south marine sector.
“This investment strengthens Nelson Marina’s position as a leading marine servicing hub and supports the continued growth of the region’s boating, fishing and marine industries. The completion of the new runways is a significant milestone and we are pleased to acknowledge the many people who have contributed to making the project a success.”
The blessing recognises not only the completion of a major infrastructure project, but also the importance of partnership, community and kaitiakitanga in the development of Nelson’s coastal assets.
The runway renewal project has been delivered through a collaborative effort involving Nelson Marina Management Limited, Nelson City Council, project managers DS Project Solutions, and construction contractors Smith Cranes Construction and Kernohan Engineering Ltd.
Following the blessing, guests will have an opportunity to view the new infrastructure, witness the first operational use of the new travel lift facilities, and share kai together at the marina.
While the travel lift infrastructure will now enter service, planning and procurement will continue for the next stage of the boatyard development programme.
