The Paparoa Ultra will double its capacity next year after the inaugural trail running event sold out in just 10 days.
The 55km event will return to the Paparoa Track on March 20, 2027, with the field increasing from 100 to 200 runners.
Its 2026 debut attracted competitors from across New Zealand, Australia and the United States, with 15 per cent of entrants coming from the West Coast.
Christchurch runners accounted for the largest share of participants at 30 per cent, followed by Nelson at 10 per cent. Auckland, Kaikōura and Central Otago each accounted for 5 per cent, with runners also travelling from Wellington, Northland and Southland.
Race organiser Andrea Hughes says the speed at which the inaugural event sold out demonstrated demand for the race.
“Selling out in just ten days showed there’s a real appetite for a unique trail running experience on the Paparoa Track.
“We also hope to continue attracting visitors from around New Zealand and overseas, bringing further benefits to our local communities.”
Development West Coast tourism manager Andrew Aitken says the event helps showcase the region as an adventure and nature-based tourism destination.
“The Paparoa Ultra is exactly the type of event that showcases the very best of the West Coast. It brings visitors into our communities, encourages them to stay longer and explore everything the region has to offer, while highlighting one of our most iconic Great Walks.”
A Kids Fun Run will also be introduced in Punakaiki for 2027, with 50 places available.
Entries for both events open at 7pm on September 1.
