Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council have agreed to consolidate the boards of Infrastructure Holdings Ltd, Port Nelson and Nelson Airport into a single governance board from January 1, 2027.
The councils say the new structure will simplify governance, improve accountability and reduce compliance costs by replacing the current three-board arrangement with a single board of seven or eight directors.
Nelson mayor Nick Smith and Tasman mayor Tim King say the change will streamline reporting while maintaining separate management for the airport and port.
“The simplified board structure also provides clearer accountability for the management of the port and airport companies and minimises conflicts of interest and compliance costs.”
The councils say there are no plans to merge the airport and port businesses, with both continuing to operate independently.
Recruitment for the new board will begin in October, with appointments expected to be confirmed in December.
