New Zealand’s vehicle rental industry generated an estimated NZ$2.3 billion in revenue in 2025, according to IBISWorld, reflecting annual compound growth of 7.6 per cent over the past five years.
The report attributes the growth to continued tourism recovery and demand from domestic and international travellers seeking flexible transport options for group, family and business travel.
The West Coast has been among the strongest-performing regions, with visitor spending rising 10.4 per cent in the year to September 2024 to $511 million, according to Infometrics. Guest nights increased 4.1 per cent over the same period, ahead of the national average.
IBISWorld forecasts the vehicle rental sector will continue to grow modestly in 2025–26 as demand for regional travel remains steady.
