New Zealand’s vehicle hire market is broadening beyond standard rental fleets, with growing demand for speciality and occasion-based vehicles as tourism continues its recovery.
Visitor numbers reached 3.43 million in the year to September 2025, according to MBIE, still below the 3.90 million recorded in the same period in 2019 but continuing to recover. The trend is supporting demand across regional destinations as travellers seek more tailored and experience-led transport options.
Nelson is one region seeing that shift, with premium and classic vehicles increasingly being marketed for weddings, events and leisure travel. Alongside conventional rental demand for longer self-drive itineraries, the market is also expanding to include niche offerings such as classic cars and higher-end special occasion vehicles.
The broader recovery in visitor demand is also reinforcing the need for nationwide rental coverage, particularly for travellers planning multi-stop itineraries across both islands.
As tourism volumes rebuild, operators offering more flexible fleet mixes – spanning economy vehicles through to speciality cars – appear well placed to capture a wider range of domestic and international travel demand.
