A proposed 25-storey mixed-use development on Hamilton’s riverfront could deliver the city’s first true high-rise tower, including a 200-plus room international five-star hotel.
Templeton Group this week presented preliminary designs for the Victoria Street Tower to Hamilton City Council. The more than $100 million project is planned for a Victoria Street site overlooking the Waikato River.
The development would comprise approximately 25,000sqm of gross floor area across 25 levels, incorporating hospitality, accommodation, wellness and residential offerings.
Plans include more than 200 hotel rooms, conference and pre-function facilities, a health and wellness complex with spa and pool terrace, 27 serviced apartments and 25 branded residences. The tower would also feature five food and beverage venues opening onto a public plaza, along with a rooftop sky bar and club lounge overlooking the Waikato River.
Hamilton Mayor Tim Macindoe said the proposal aligned with the city’s growth trajectory and increasing visitor demand.
“A 2025 feasibility study shows Hamilton will require around 500 additional hotel rooms by 2030,” he says, noting the city’s expanding events calendar and the accommodation demand generated by major events.
Templeton Group founder and chairman Nigel McKenna says the development would help attract international hotel brands to Hamilton while activating a prominent riverfront precinct.
Templeton says it has received strong interest from multiple international five-star hotel operators and had already invested more than $1 million in the project, supported by a team of specialist consultants.
Designed by Ignite Architects, the tower draws inspiration from Hamilton’s Edwardian heritage, the Waikato River and the city’s surrounding landscape. Templeton is progressing the project’s cultural obligations in partnership with mana whenua.
