Construction of the new Oturere Hut on the Tongariro Northern Circuit remains on schedule ahead of the 2026 Great Walk season, although part of the track network damaged by fires last year will remain closed this summer.
The Department of Conservation says the Mangatepopo Track remains unavailable following fires in late 2025, meaning the Tongariro Northern Circuit will temporarily operate as an end-to-end tramp between Mangatepopo Road end and Whakapapa Village rather than a full circuit.
DOC principal ranger Jenny Hayward says contractors had been making strong progress on the new hut despite challenging alpine conditions.
“Of course, any kind of work in Tongariro National Park is weather dependent, but we’re making great progress so far,” she says.
New hut taking shape
DOC and Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro worked together on the design of the new 28-bed Oturere Hut, which is intended to improve both safety and the visitor experience on the Great Walk.
“There’s a really solid frame in place now and we’re starting to see the shape of what’s to come,” Jenny says.
She says a separate shelter for campers had also been included in the design.
“We’ve also made sure there is a separate shelter for campers, so it’s not everyone crowding in to use the same facilities. It’s going to make for a far better overnight experience for everyone who is out there naturing.”
The opening of the new hut will allow the Tongariro Northern Circuit to regain its Great Walk status after a hiatus last season.
Fire damage alters route
Jenny says the late-2025 fires caused significant damage to the Mangatepopo Track, with affected structures unable to be repaired in time for the upcoming summer season.
“So, the Great Walk will be less of a circuit, more of an arc between Mangatepopo Road end and Whakapapa Village.
“It’ll be worth considering your transport options in advance, and we’ll have some guidance about this on the DOC website,” she says.
DOC says work has also been completed to improve sections of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Tama Lakes tracks ahead of the summer season.
Bookings open next week
Bookings for the Tongariro Northern Circuit open at 9.30am on Thursday, May 21, through the DOC website.
