A major industrial land development in Christchurch has been granted approval under the Government’s Fast-track process, marking the 20th project approved nationwide.
The Pound Road development, led by Ngāi Tahu Property Development Holdings, will see a 60.4-hectare site subdivided for industrial use northwest of Pound Road and east of Barters Road.
Industrial capacity expansion
Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop says the project will deliver a mix of industrial lots ranging from around 2,000 square metres to 1.5 hectares.
The first stage is expected to include around 50 lots, with 84 lots planned across the full development.
The site is intended to support “dry” industrial uses, including light manufacturing, warehousing and logistics.
Economic and business impact
Regional Development Minister Shane Jones says the project is expected to contribute significantly to the regional economy.
“Projects like these unlock economic growth and jobs for communities.
“During construction it is expected to contribute $451 million to the economy and once fully developed the businesses occupying the site will generate hundreds of millions more.”
Chris says the development will support both new and existing businesses in Christchurch.
“This will provide Christchurch with opportunities for new businesses and for the current 48,000 businesses in Christchurch to grow or expand.”
Fast-track progress
The approval follows an application lodged in July 2025, with the decision taking around seven months, including a period of suspension.
The project has received approvals under the Resource Management Act 1991 and the Wildlife Act 1953, subject to conditions.
Ngāi Tahu Property Development Holdings will also deliver supporting infrastructure, including roads, landscaping and three-waters services.
