Two huts on the Tongariro Northern Circuit are now available to book over winter, in a move aimed at improving safety and certainty for trampers.
Department of Conservation has confirmed Waihohonu Hut and Mangatepopo Hut will operate as serviced huts during the off-season rather than on a first-in, first-served basis.
Bookings are open from May 1 to June 30, with further availability from June 1 to follow when next season’s Great Walk bookings open on May 21.
Greater certainty for trampers
Department of Conservation principal ranger Jenny Hayward says the change removes uncertainty for visitors heading into alpine conditions.
“There’s a big difference between snow camping and having a cosy night in a hut. Having a booked spot means you’ll fall safely on the side of a cosy night!”
Jenny says the new system means trampers no longer need to carry tents and sleeping mats in case huts are full.
Entry-level winter option
The huts are positioned as suitable for a range of experience levels, depending on preparation.
“It’s less than 2 km from the road-end to Mangatepopo Hut, so it’s a great entry-level adventure for colder weather.
“With your space booked in the hut, you know you won’t be squished into a corner for a miserable night.”
Winter hut facilities
Serviced huts include mattresses, untreated water supply and toilets. The Tongariro huts also have fireplaces, with firewood sometimes provided.
DOC says visitors should bring their own cooking equipment, as facilities are not available.
The update comes as Oturere Hut remains closed for rebuilding.
