The Government has allocated more than $3.2 million to support a series of events across the country, as part of its $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says the funding will support events running from May to December, spanning sport, food, culture and innovation.
Events named in the latest funding round include the Solo Trans-Tasman yacht race in Ōpua, culinary programming linked to Visa Wellington On a Plate, Matariki celebrations in Rotorua, the Deaf International Basketball Federation World 3×3 Cup in Auckland, and running festivals in Tekapo and the Nelson Tasman region.
Upston says the investment is intended to strengthen regional economies by attracting domestic and international visitors outside peak periods.
“While many are established events, this funding supports new elements and aims to increase participation and international visitation,” she says.
The announcement was made at Wellington restaurant Glou Glou, where the minister highlighted chef collaborations and culinary exchanges designed to appeal to high-spending food travellers.
Further funding announcements under the $70 million package are expected in coming months.
