ChristchurchNZ has appointed Anne Newman as its new general manager of visitor economy, strengthening the agency’s leadership as the city enters a period of growth.
Anne starts in the role today and will lead ChristchurchNZ’s visitor economy function, overseeing strategy and delivery to grow visitation sustainably, increase value across the tourism and major events ecosystem, and support the city’s reputation as a destination for leisure, business and events.
The appointment comes as Ōtautahi Christchurch sees major infrastructure investment come online, alongside a strong pipeline of events and increasing trans-Tasman and international interest.
ChristchurchNZ chief executive Ali Adams says the appointment reflects a focus on ensuring the visitor economy delivers long-term benefits for the city.
“Anne brings a rare combination of destination leadership, major events expertise and deep local knowledge,” Ali says. “Her experience, credibility and passion for Ōtautahi make her well placed to help lead the next phase of our visitor economy.”
Anne was previously founding chief executive of Christchurch Adventure Park, where she helped establish the attraction and guide it through challenges including fires, flooding and the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, she received the Emerging Tourism Leader Award at the New Zealand Tourism Awards.
She says the opportunity to help shape Christchurch’s future was a key driver in taking up the role.
“This role brings together destination, events, people and place,” Anne says. “Christchurch has world-class infrastructure, strong international connectivity and clear ambition to compete globally. I’m looking forward to building on the work already underway and ensuring the visitor economy delivers for residents and visitors.”
With Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre established and a new 30,000-seat stadium scheduled to open in 2026, Anne says the city is entering a defining period.
“The opportunity now is to fully leverage those assets, attract more visitors, and continue making Ōtautahi Christchurch a great place to live and visit,” she says.
