Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston has announced more than $450,000 in funding for a new international tourism campaign aimed at boosting visitation to the Waikato and central North Island as autumn approaches.
The $459,250 investment will support the One Flight campaign, promoting seasonal travel deals and itineraries designed to attract international visitors, particularly from Australia, via direct flights into Hamilton Airport.
Upston says the campaign will encourage visitors to explore the region from the moment they arrive.
“I’m excited visitors will be able to experience the best the Waikato region has to offer from the moment their flight touches down,” says Upston.
“This campaign celebrates what makes the region unique, from cycling the Waikato River Trails and exploring the Hobbiton Movie Set, to visiting the Waitomo glowworm caves or the Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth. Autumn brings a new perspective to our landscapes, farmers’ markets are in full swing and our hospitality is always warm.”
The One Flight campaign will be delivered through a regional collaboration led by Hamilton & Waikato Tourism, alongside Destination Great Lake Taupō, Visit Ruapehu and Venture Taranaki.
The partnership aims to make it easier for international visitors to explore the heart of the North Island, with themed itineraries and travel offers tailored to the autumn season.
“Seasonal deals and new itineraries will help support local businesses, create jobs and reflect the pride locals have in their communities,” says Upston.
The One Flight campaign is one of five initiatives funded through the second stage of the Regional Tourism Boost (Round 2), a $3.69 million programme designed to increase international visitation to regional New Zealand during autumn and early winter 2026.
