All Great Walks across Aotearoa are now officially open for the 2024/25 season, with the Department of Conservation confirming that weather-related delays affecting the Milford, Kepler and Routeburn tracks have been resolved. The Milford Track reopened on Sunday, November 24, restoring full access across the network.
DOC says early indicators point to strong interest in the months ahead, with several tracks already nearing capacity on peak dates. Last season saw high occupancy across the network, including around 95 per cent on the Milford and Abel Tasman tracks, highlighting the continued popularity of multi-day hiking experiences.
Some tracks also saw significant increases in bed nights after reopening from storm damage, with Lake Waikaremoana and the Heaphy among the strongest performers.
DOC heritage and visitors director Cat Wilson says New Zealanders continue to show a strong appetite for returning to nature and reconnecting with the whenua.
“With all Great Walks now open, this is the perfect time to plan an adventure, whether that’s a multi-day tramp or simply a short walk with the whānau.”
DOC reminds people that although many Great Walks book out early during holidays and long weekends, availability can still be found outside peak periods, on less busy tracks, or through checking for cancellations, which occur regularly throughout the season.
The department is also encouraging visitors to explore short walks and day hikes, which can offer the same scenery and sense of escape as the longer journeys without the need for extensive planning or overnight bookings.
Alongside trip planning, DOC is urging walkers to prioritise safety and care for the natural environment. Weather in alpine areas can change rapidly, and visitors should carry appropriate gear, check track updates and follow Leave No Trace principles. Respecting wildlife and hut etiquette also helps maintain the Great Walks for future generations.
“Whether you’re taking on a four-day journey or an afternoon wander, naturing is for everyone,” says Cat. “We want people to enjoy these places safely and help us care for them.”
