Christchurch Airport has welcomed Originair’s new service connecting Blenheim and Christchurch, restoring a key regional air link across the South Island.
The weekday and Sunday service began on Saturday, October 19, with the first aircraft greeted by a water arch as it taxied in.
Operated by a British Aerospace Jetstream 32 aircraft, the new route provides return flights supporting business, tourism and patient travel to specialist healthcare services.
Christchurch Airport general manager aeronautical development Gordon Bevan says the service is an important step in maintaining regional connections.
“We’re proud to work alongside Originair and Marlborough Airport to keep the South Island connected. Collaboration like this ensures essential travel remains easy and reliable. Regional routes like this are an important part of our network, supporting connectivity, care and commerce across the island,” says Gordon.
He says the new link represents a significant opportunity for Marlborough.
“This is a 20,000-passenger market – two thirds the size of the Blenheim population – so the significance for Marlborough cannot be underestimated.”
The launch marks the beginning of a partnership focused on regional growth and accessibility across the South Island.
