With the recent news of two new seasonal visas under the AEWV framework, tourism operators in Queenstown and Wānaka have long struggled with staffing shortages during seasonal peaks. For the region’s tourism leaders, these new visas provide a welcome safety net.
Mat Woods, chief executive Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism, says “The new seasonal visas are great news for tourism operators, from snowmaking to winemaking, enabling highly skilled seasonal talent to return to the region,”
“This will bring greater consistency and reduce disruption across the tourism sector, ensuring visitors enjoy world-class experiences across all four seasons.” he says.
With stable staffing, operators expect improvements in service quality, open facilities, and seamless experiences.
“Having the right people in the right place at the right time means visitors can experience great service and open facilities, helping reinforce Queenstown’s reputation as the southern hemisphere’s premier four-season destination.” says Mat.
Beyond operational reliability, the visas are also expected to encourage tourism investment and product development.
“The change sends a positive message to tourism operators, giving them the confidence to invest in their workforce and product offerings.” he says.
