Development West Coast, in association with industry stakeholders, is set to host the fourth annual Manaakitanga ki te Tai Poutini Hui | West Coast Tourism Summit on Wednesday, September 3, at Shantytown in Greymouth.
This year’s theme, “Gearing for Growth”, highlights the importance of implementing a seasonal strategy, adapting to changing traveller expectations, and leveraging digital advancements while nurturing our people, culture and environment.
The free, full-day event will bring together tourism operators, industry experts and the wider community, with keynote presentations from Tourism New Zealand, Christchurch International Airport and RealNZ, as well as a range of panel discussions and breakout sessions.
DWC destination and tourism manager Andrew Aitken says the summit is an opportunity to both celebrate the sector and prepare it for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
“Tourism is a vital part of the West Coast economy, and it’s an industry that never stands still.
“This summit is about making sure our operators are connected, informed and inspired so we can collectively lift the Coast’s tourism offering and deliver exceptional experiences for visitors year-round.”
Speakers include Bobbi Brown from Great South on the role of destination management in enabling growth, Angela Blair from Tourism New Zealand with an update on international performance and focus areas, and Scott Callaway from Christchurch International Airport on the path to 2030 and supporting growth on the Coast.
There will also be sessions on building strong teams, enhancing customer experiences, strengthening resilience in tourism and hospitality businesses, and the launch of the new Real West tourism training programme by Scenic Hotel Group CEO Karl Luxon.
Andrew says the event is as much about connection as it is about learning.
“It’s a rare opportunity to have so many tourism leaders, local operators and community members in the same room. The conversations, collaborations and relationships that come out of this day are just as valuable as the presentations on stage.”
The summit will run from 9am to 4pm at Shantytown in Greymouth, with free entry and registration essential.
Following the summit, Monteith’s Brewing Co. will host an After Event Networking and Dinner from 4.30pm until late. Tickets for the evening event are $40, which includes both dinner and drinks.
