Christchurch is preparing for a surge in visitors over April, with back-to-back major events expected to draw domestic travellers during the school holidays and Anzac Day period.
The city will host its first-ever Supercars event in the South Island from April 17–19 at Ruapuna Raceway, followed by a full round of Super Rugby Pacific matches from April 24–26 at the new One New Zealand Stadium.
Events boost regional travel
Transport officials say increased traffic volumes are expected on key routes, particularly State Highway 1, as visitors travel to Christchurch for the events.
NZTA area manager Mark Pinner says the events will bring significant movement across the network.
“We can expect plenty of people travelling to Christchurch for this festival of Super Rugby… on top of the local attendance,” Mark says.
Transport planning in focus
Temporary traffic management will be in place around Ruapuna Raceway during the Supercars weekend, with park and ride and shuttle services operating to manage demand.
With the events coinciding with the school holidays and a long weekend, authorities are urging travellers to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.
“We want to see the high speeds staying on the racetrack, and people sticking to the speed limit on the roads,” Mark says.
Visitor experience considerations
Officials say the combination of major events, holiday travel and roadworks may lead to congestion and delays, particularly if weather conditions deteriorate.
The April events calendar positions Christchurch as a key host city for large-scale sporting events, supporting domestic visitation and activity across the region.
