Community groups and individuals contributing to Kāpiti’s cultural and social life are being recognised through two annual awards programmes now open for nominations.
The Kāpiti Coast District Council is calling for entries for the Kāpiti Good Sorts Awards and the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards, which celebrate efforts across areas including arts and culture, heritage, environment and recreation.
Showcasing local identity
Mayor Janet Holborow says the awards highlight the people and groups helping to strengthen the region.
“The awards are an opportunity to give back to our unsung heroes and provide a spotlight to celebrate their inspiring stories and mahi in a meaningful way,” Janet says.
Categories for the regional awards include arts and culture, sport and leisure, and heritage and environment — areas that contribute to the character and appeal of the district.
Wider community impact
Council says many initiatives recognised through the awards support wellbeing, community connection and local experiences, with past winners spanning environmental projects, events and youth-focused programmes.
Last year, Māoriland Charitable Trust received both the regional Supreme Award and Arts and Culture Award, while the Ōtaki Kids Market was recognised in the education and youth category.
Janet says the awards reflect the role community-led activity plays across the district.
“Many of our residents are doing it tough right now, and to have community-minded people… creating lasting impact where it matters most deserves recognition,” she says.
Regional profile
Finalists from Kāpiti progress to the wider Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards later in the year, providing additional visibility for local initiatives.
Council is encouraging nominations from across the district, noting the contribution of grassroots efforts to making Kāpiti “a great place to live, work, and play”.
