Maintenance work has been completed on Mueller Hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, improving conditions at one of New Zealand’s most popular alpine destinations outside the Great Walk network.
The Department of Conservation upgrade included new windows and doors, replacement cladding, and upgraded water tanks and gas systems, following what DOC says is the most significant maintenance project at the hut in more than 20 years.
Challenging alpine conditions
Located at 1850 metres and overlooking Aoraki/Mount Cook, the hut required materials and personnel to be transported by helicopter, with crews working in difficult weather conditions.
DOC project lead Rob Stewart says the work involved 16 loads of materials and 10 loads of staff, including specialist trades.
“The weather was horrendous for us to be honest, apart from one day,” Rob says.
Supporting high visitor demand
DOC Aoraki/Mount Cook operations manager Sally Jones says the route to Mueller Hut remains a key draw for visitors seeking alpine experiences.
“It’s a challenging climb of around four hours one way and attracts numerous day walkers and overnight visitors,” Sally says.
The upgrade is expected to improve comfort, with better insulation and weatherproofing addressing previous issues such as leaking windows and snow entering the hut.
Tourism and conservation balance
Alpine huts such as Mueller Hut play an important role in supporting visitor access to high-value natural environments, while requiring ongoing investment to withstand extreme conditions.
The improvements are designed to extend the life of the hut for at least another 20 years, ensuring it continues to support both domestic and international visitors.
Mueller Hut operates on the DOC booking system from November 1 to April 30.
