A new Matariki-themed rail journey linking Christchurch and Kaikōura is set to showcase cultural and night-sky tourism on the South Island’s east coast.
Operated by Great Journeys New Zealand, the one-day return service will run on July 11, aligning with Matariki celebrations.
Cultural experience on rail
The journey will travel from Ōtautahi Christchurch to Kaikōura, combining storytelling, seasonal food and stargazing experiences tied to the Māori New Year.
KiwiRail Māori executive general manager Logan Kahui says the experience reflects the themes of remembrance, reflection and renewal associated with Matariki.
“Matariki is a time to honour our tīpuna and reflect on our connections to each other and the natural world,” Logan says.
Showcasing night-sky tourism
In Kaikōura, visitors will take part in a guided stargazing experience at Fyffe House, within the Kaikōura Dark Sky Sanctuary.
The experience highlights the growing role of astro-tourism and culturally led visitor experiences in regional tourism development.
Encouraging regional visitation
Events aligned with Matariki are increasingly being used to attract visitors during the winter period, supporting regional dispersal and off-peak travel.
Destination Kaikōura destination manager Lisa Bond says the timing offers an opportunity to showcase the region’s natural environment and cultural storytelling.
Experiential tourism trend
The rail journey reflects wider demand for immersive, experience-led travel, combining transport, culture and landscape into a single offering.
Bookings for the 2026 experience are now open.
