An international football fixture featuring Tottenham Hotspur is set to headline a new event aimed at attracting visitors during the winter season.
Announced on March 30, the inaugural International Football Festival will see Tottenham Hotspur take on Auckland FC at Eden Park on July 26.
Major events strategy
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says the event is supported through the Government’s $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package.
“This is a win for our tourism industry, with international visitors expected to travel for the event and explore the country,” Upston says.
The match marks the first visit by an English top-flight men’s club to New Zealand since 2014.
Driving visitor demand
The festival will include additional activities such as open training sessions and fan events, aimed at extending visitor stays and increasing engagement beyond the match itself.
Major sporting events are a key part of New Zealand’s strategy to attract international visitors during shoulder and off-peak periods, supporting regional dispersal and hospitality demand.
Global exposure
The event is expected to attract international broadcast coverage, contributing to New Zealand’s profile as a destination for major events and sport tourism.
