A runway extension at Hamilton Airport has secured government backing, with a $6.5 million loan approved to support increased capacity and resilience across the aviation network.
Regional development minister Shane Jones says the project will enable the airport to accommodate a wider range of aircraft.
“Extending the runway will increase Hamilton Airport’s capacity to support a broader range of aircraft,” Shane says.
Supporting tourism and regional access
The upgrade is expected to strengthen connectivity for the Waikato region, supporting both passenger travel and freight movement.
Hamilton Airport’s location and access to major transport routes position it as an alternative hub, particularly during disruptions at other North Island airports.
Recent events, including flight diversions from Auckland due to weather, have highlighted the importance of additional capacity across the network.
Infrastructure investment
The project includes extending the runway by 255 metres to 2,450 metres, alongside apron and lighting upgrades.
The work will also allow for further expansion in future if required.
The loan will be provided to Waikato Regional Airport Ltd, with the organisation contributing $3.3 million towards the project.
Economic and network benefits
Construction is expected to create up to 39 jobs, while the completed upgrade is aimed at improving reliability across both domestic and international aviation links.
Shane says the investment aligns with wider efforts to strengthen New Zealand’s aviation infrastructure.
“Extending Hamilton Airport supports a more resilient national aviation network,” he says.
