The Government is seeking proposals to restore and operate the historic Chateau Tongariro, in a move aimed at supporting tourism in one of New Zealand’s most iconic destinations.
Conservation Minister Tama Potaka says a Request for Proposals opened on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, inviting experienced operators to put forward plans for the site.
Located within Tongariro National Park, the Chateau has long been a key visitor attraction and part of the region’s tourism offering.
“The Chateau is a landmark many New Zealanders have visited, from holidays to school trips, as well as international visitors experiencing Tongariro for the first time,” Potaka says.
Supporting regional tourism
The restoration is expected to play a role in maintaining visitor demand in the central North Island, while supporting local businesses and tourism operators.
Potaka says proposals will need to balance commercial viability with conservation and cultural considerations.
“We are looking for proposals that respect the heritage significance of the Chateau, the cultural importance of Tongariro National Park, and the aspirations of mana whenua,” he says.
Focus on sustainable development
The RFP process aims to identify an operator capable of restoring the building while aligning with the environmental and heritage values of the national park.
Potaka says the goal is to return the Chateau to use in a way that supports sustainable tourism.
“The right proposal will help bring the Chateau back into use while protecting the park and benefiting surrounding communities,” he says.
