Community events across Tauranga and the Western Bay are set to expand, with more than $1 million confirmed in funding for 2026–2027, supporting a pipeline of events that contribute to regional tourism and visitor activity.
The Tauranga Western Bay Community Event Fund has been extended for a further three years, with backing from partners including the Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council, alongside regional funders.
The funding is aimed at supporting locally-led events across the region, including cultural festivals, sporting events and family-focused activities.
Supporting visitor appeal
The programme plays a role in enhancing the region’s event calendar, helping to attract visitors and encourage longer stays.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council community and strategic relationships manager Jodie Rickard says the continued investment will give organisers greater certainty.
“The commitment to continue collaborating, combined with increased funding, gives event organisers greater certainty to plan, grow and deliver events that bring people together,” Jodie says.
Fifteen events have been confirmed in the latest funding round, reflecting a mix of cultural, community and recreational activities across Tauranga and the Western Bay.
Building regional event capacity
Since launching in 2022, the fund has supported events aimed at strengthening community connection and participation, while also contributing to the region’s profile as a destination.
TECT chief executive Wayne Werder says the programme supports a wide range of outcomes.
“By investing in community-led events, we’re investing in social connection, local pride and shared experiences that bring our region together,” Wayne says.
Pipeline of events ahead
The next funding round is now open for events taking place between July and September 2026, with applications closing on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
The extended funding commitment is expected to support both established and emerging events, contributing to a more consistent year-round events offering across the region.
