Auckland’s April school holiday programme is set to drive domestic visitation, with a mix of immersive experiences, exhibitions and major events across the city.
Central city installations are a key drawcard, including Darklight: The Hidden World at the Aotea Centre, alongside large-scale public light and sound works in Aotea Square and at the New Zealand International Convention Centre. These free and ticketed experiences contribute to a broader programme aimed at attracting families into the city centre.
Cultural and family attractions
Major attractions are also running holiday programmes, including exhibitions and interactive experiences at the New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and Auckland Museum.
Hands-on activities and installations are a focus, with programmes designed to encourage longer dwell time and repeat visitation across key cultural institutions.
At Auckland Zoo, themed trails and indoor exhibits continue to support all-weather visitation, while Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) and Stardome Observatory and Planetarium are offering science and space-themed experiences.
Events and entertainment
Sport and live entertainment also feature strongly in the holiday calendar, with matches scheduled at Eden Park, Go Media Stadium and North Harbour Stadium, alongside theatre performances at The Civic.
Outdoor activity is supported by initiatives such as the Aotearoa Art Fair Sculpture Trail along the waterfront, providing free access to large-scale artworks in public spaces.
Driving domestic travel
The breadth of the programme highlights the role of school holiday events in supporting domestic tourism, particularly family travel.
A mix of free, low-cost and ticketed experiences across multiple locations is expected to encourage visitors to travel to Auckland and extend their stay.
