Major events are continuing to drive domestic tourism demand, with new data highlighting a sharp increase in accommodation searches around large-scale concerts in Auckland.
Data from Booking.com shows accommodation searches by New Zealand users for Auckland between March 17–19, 2026 increased by 150 per cent year-on-year, coinciding with a major concert at Spark Arena.
The figures highlight the growing role of live events in influencing travel behaviour, particularly for short domestic trips.
Events shaping travel patterns
Research from Booking.com indicates that events are becoming a key motivator for travel decisions.
More than half of solo travellers (53 per cent) and 63 per cent of group travellers say they plan trips around concerts and festivals.
The trend suggests music and entertainment events are increasingly contributing to demand across accommodation, hospitality and transport sectors.
Growing opportunity for event-led tourism
Auckland’s event infrastructure is also expanding, with increased concert capacity at venues such as Eden Park and upgrades at Western Springs Stadium.
The combination of larger venues and high-profile events is expected to support further growth in event-led travel.
The data points to a broader shift towards “event-driven travel”, where visitors plan trips around specific experiences rather than destinations alone.
