A redeveloped luxury resort overlooking the Shotover River has officially opened in Queenstown, following a multimillion-dollar upgrade of the former Nugget Point Hotel.
Queenstown Lakes mayor John Glover formally opened the new Coronet Ridge Resort on Thursday, March 12, highlighting the importance of continued investment in tourism infrastructure for the region.
John was joined at the opening by owners New Bay Group, management partner Capstone Hotel Management, project partners, tourism representatives and media.
John says the redevelopment reflects confidence in the region’s visitor economy.
“The location of this hotel has always been a standout feature for its customers – the sweet spot between the countryside and easy access to a thriving downtown Queenstown,” John says.
“The former Nugget Point hotel stood the test of time, but it is wonderful to see the site revamped, refreshed and re-named under new ownership that has the confidence to invest in our district.”
He says the surrounding Arthur’s Point area has also grown as a visitor hub, with hospitality venues, cycle trails and public transport supporting visitor access.
The 41-room Coronet Ridge Resort sits above the Shotover River in Arthur’s Point and targets high-end travellers seeking a luxury alpine experience.
New Bay Group executive director HC Tan says the company was drawn to the property’s location when it acquired the hotel in 2022.
“We saw Nugget Point Hotel in 2022 and fell in love with it. To see Coronet Ridge Resort come to life in such a spectacular setting is immensely rewarding,” Tan says.
“We believe this property will set a new standard for alpine luxury in New Zealand and become a sought-after destination for discerning travellers from around the world.”
Queenstown continues to experience strong visitor demand, with international passenger movements at Queenstown Airport reaching 111,625 in January 2025 – a 10 per cent increase compared with the same month a year earlier.
The destination also continues to lead the country in hotel performance, with operators recording growth in revenue per available room, occupancy and average daily rate.
Capstone Hotel Management managing director Clare Davies says the redevelopment has focused on delivering a high-end guest experience.
“Coronet Ridge Resort is a truly extraordinary property and we are privileged to be entrusted with its management,” Clare says.
“Our team is dedicated to delivering an experience that reflects the ambition and vision of New Bay Group.”
Facilities at the resort include conference space for up to 30 people, a Roman-inspired day spa, outdoor hot tubs, a fitness centre, squash courts and a private cinema.
Elevation Bar & Restaurant offers views across the Wakatipu Basin, the Remarkables and the Shotover River, with a menu developed by executive chef Dominic Dsouza.
The resort is located about 10 minutes from Queenstown town centre and 15 minutes from Queenstown Airport, and sits about 13 minutes from Coronet Peak ski area.
