Several tracks in Pirongia Forest Park have reopened as the Department of Conservation continues clean-up work following severe weather in February.
The Pirongia maunga was hit by heavy rain and flooding on February 13-14, causing significant damage across the track network including slips, fallen trees and damaged bridges.
DOC Waikato operations manager Niwha Jones says staff have completed initial assessments across the maunga and some tracks are now safe to reopen.
“The popular Nikau Walk and Loop has reopened, however visitors should be aware contractors are working on repairs and pedestrian management may be in place while machinery is operating,” Niwha says.
The Pāhautea Hut and campsite have also reopened for bookings.
Access to the hut is currently from Waite Road via the Ruapane and Tirohanga tracks only. Visitors must return using the same route.
DOC says no other tracks to the hut are currently open while planning begins for repairs to the Tahuanui Track.
The Mangakara Nature Walk will remain closed due to the destruction of two bridges.
“We will need to plan and budget for replacements,” Niwha says.
The Bell Track and Mahaukura Track were also heavily damaged by slips and require further assessment before reopening decisions are made.
Hihikiwi Track remains closed due to surrounding public road closures.
DOC advises visitors to check the latest track conditions before travelling.
