The Department of Conservation Community Fund will open for applications on Monday, March 31, with $9.2 million available to support community-led conservation projects across New Zealand.
The 2026 funding round will close on April 30, with successful applicants to be announced from July.
DOC says the fund will prioritise projects protecting threatened indigenous species and ecosystems, promoting collaboration, and enabling meaningful Māori engagement.
More than 1000 native species are currently classified as threatened with extinction, and nearly two-thirds of rare ecosystems are considered at risk.
DOC deputy director-general public affairs and partnerships Sia Aston says community groups play a critical role in delivering conservation outcomes.
“By drawing on volunteer effort, expertise and co-funding, DOC can amplify the positive change these groups create,” Sia says.
Eligible applicants include community groups, iwi and hapū, and private landowners undertaking conservation work.
Details on eligibility criteria and application requirements are available on the DOC website.
