Tourism Industry Aotearoa has welcomed the latest round of funding under the Government’s $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package, announced in Wellington this morning by Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston.
TIA chief executive Rebecca Ingram says the announcement provides further momentum for the sector.
“Major events play an important role in driving visitation and economic activity,” Rebecca says. “The events announced today highlight New Zealand’s food, sport, culture and arts, and provide compelling reasons for visitors to travel across the country, particularly during the traditionally quieter May to December period.”
She notes the mix of established and newer events included in the funding round.
“That combination keeps the national events calendar fresh and relevant,” Rebecca says.
“When events are well supported, they can generate vibrancy that extends beyond the venue into the wider community.”
The announcement follows other recent tourism-focused initiatives, including Regional Tourism Boost investments announced over summer, and confirmation that World Surf League Championship Tour will return to Raglan in May.
Further details on the funded events are outlined in the minister’s statement.
