All roads across the Coromandel Peninsula were reopened ahead of the Waitangi Day long weekend, with local hospitality operators encouraging visitors back to the region following recent storm damage.
Coromandel Mayor Peter Revell says recovery work has progressed quickly, allowing the district to welcome visitors for the long weekend.
Council crews, alongside Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and the Department of Conservation, have completed extensive clean-up operations to reopen roads, restore water services, and make tracks and campgrounds accessible.
Key visitor attractions including Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, the Pinnacles, Whangamatā’s surf beaches, Coromandel Town, Thames, and the northern reaches of the peninsula are all open.
Mayor Revell says the return of visitors will play an important role in the district’s recovery.
“The emergency has passed and our ongoing recovery will be helped by seeing tourists and visitors enjoy everything the Coromandel has to offer — from hospitality and adventure to beaches, history and our communities,” he says.
Visitors are advised to check Thames-Coromandel District Council, Waka Kotahi and DOC websites for the latest travel and access updates before heading away.
