Restaurant Association of New Zealand chief executive Marisa Bidois has announced she will step down from the role at the end of February, concluding 14 years leading advocacy for New Zealand’s hospitality sector.
Restaurant Association president Mike Egan says Marisa’s departure marks a natural transition point following more than a decade of sustained leadership.
“Marisa has been a tireless and highly respected advocate for hospitality and the people behind it,” Mike says. “She has led the sector through some of its most challenging moments with integrity, clarity and an unwavering focus on people.”
During her tenure, Marisa helped secure key policy outcomes, strengthened industry capability and guided hospitality businesses through COVID-19, natural disasters, workforce shortages and regulatory change. Mike says her leadership was instrumental in the sector gaining dedicated ministerial recognition and progressing long-sought regulatory reform.
Marisa says she is grateful for the trust placed in her by members and feels the time is right for a new challenge.
“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and deeply indebted to our membership, who make up the diverse and resilient hospitality industry in New Zealand,” Marisa says. “To our members: thank you for the trust, courage, challenge and commitment — you are what makes this industry so special.”
The Association’s current general manager, Nicola Waldren, will step up to lead the organisation. Nicola has been part of the Association’s senior leadership team for 20 years, providing continuity for both members and the wider industry.
Nicola says Marisa’s contribution has been significant.
“I am excited to continue championing the voice of our members and our sector to support a more sustainable and resilient future for hospitality, particularly as we approach the election season,” Nicola says.
Mike says the Association’s focus on internal capability and succession planning will ensure a smooth transition.
“We have a strong and experienced management team, a clear purpose and a critical role to play as the sector continues to navigate change,” he says.
Marisa’s final day as chief executive will be Friday, February 27, 2026.
