The Government will invest $250,000 to upgrade the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop Great Ride in Rotorua, improving safety and encouraging more visitors into the region, Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston has announced.
The funding will support safety improvements by rerouting sections of the trail through the forest and away from the concrete pathway alongside State Highway 5. The upgrade will also extend the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop by around six kilometres.
“I’m pleased to be investing in the future of this popular cycle trail and contributing to a safer and more enjoyable experience for locals and visitors,” says Upston.
The Whakarewarewa Forest Loop is one of New Zealand’s newest Great Rides and sits within Rotorua’s internationally recognised Whakarewarewa Forest, also known as the Redwoods, which features more than 200 kilometres of purpose-built trails.
“Visiting the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop is a great way to experience Rotorua’s iconic forest environment,” says Upston.
“With trails suitable for a range of riders, it offers a world-class cycling experience.”
The investment forms part of the Government’s $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package, which includes a series of cycle trail infrastructure upgrades.
“Upgrading tourism infrastructure improves the visitor experience and supports the future of regional tourism,” says Upston.
“This means more people visiting Rotorua, supporting local businesses, jobs and the local economy.”
