When air travel becomes uncertain particularly during global disruptions and the busiest time of the year- Christmas, where cancellations and delays have a ripple effect on flight schedules, questions arise on the impact it has beyond the airports.
Karen Thompson-Smith,Tātaki Auckland Unlimited head of tourism says, “Any disruption to air travel can understandably create uncertainty for travellers and impact their overall experience,” She notes that while airlines play a central role in managing disruptions, the flow-on effects can be felt well beyond the airport.
While travellers can choose shorter stays, building in more flexible itineraries, or delay bookings altogether during peak-season travel, Karen says “Delays can lead to additional costs for accommodation, activities, and transport- particularly if travellers arrive later than planned or face limited availability and higher prices,” she says.
Destinations are also being challenged to think differently about how they package and promote experiences- especially for travellers seeking reassurance and flexibility.
Karen says there are practical ways travellers can protect themselves when plans change unexpectedly. “This is why booking through reputable travel agents and ensuring appropriate travel insurance are important steps for mitigating risk and managing disruptions effectively,” she says. “These measures provide travellers with support and flexibility when plans change unexpectedly.”
For Auckland, maintaining confidence among international visitors is also key.
“For international visitors, New Zealand – and Auckland in particular – continues to be recognised as a safe and reliable destination,” Karen says.
“By reinforcing this reputation and promoting services that offer flexibility and peace of mind, we can help maintain traveler confidence even during periods of uncertainty,” she says.
