Forest & Bird’s Kiwi Conservation Club is inviting New Zealanders of all ages to embrace the outdoors through its Summer Adventure Challenges, running from Monday, December 8, 2025, to Sunday, February 1, 2026.
The initiative encourages participants to swap screen time for green time through five fun, easy-to-do challenges designed to help families, young people and nature lovers connect with te taiao, the natural world.
“Summer is the perfect time to reconnect with the outdoors,” Forest & Bird’s Lily Duval says. “These challenges are about making nature part of everyday life, whether you’re in the city, at the beach, or in your own backyard.”
Five nature-based challenges will be delivered via email and promoted on social media throughout the summer holidays.
“The first challenge, which launched on December 8, is called Stick Figures. The aim is to create something using found natural objects. Other challenges will involve walks, treasure hunts and more,” Lily says.
The challenges are accessible anywhere, with no need to travel to national parks, and are open to people of all ages with no membership or sign-up required. Participants simply visit the Summer Adventure Challenges page on the Forest & Bird website, follow the entry link, and complete the prompts.
There are prizes to be won, with each challenge offering rewards for participants. All entries go into the draw to win major prizes, including an overnight family trip within New Zealand for four people, courtesy of Intrepid Travel.
Forest & Bird says New Zealand’s unique biodiversity is under increasing pressure, and fostering a love of nature — particularly among young people and families — is essential for long-term conservation.
By making outdoor adventures accessible and rewarding, the Summer Adventure Challenges aim to build stronger connections between communities and the environment.
