Nelson Airport’s popular Walk the Runway community event will return on Saturday, 24 January 2026, offering a one-of-a-kind experience — a sunset stroll along the airport runway.
Walk the Runway was previously held in 2023 and 2024, but Nelson Airport’s $10 million Apron Project construction work in 2025 meant the event could not be held this year. With completion of the apron reconstruction and stormwater upgrade scheduled for this month, the event will return in 2026.
Nelson Airport head of corporate services Beth Catley said the airport was excited to bring back the event, which previously attracted crowds of around 2,000 people.
“It’s such a special experience to take a behind-the-scenes look at the airfield, capture stunning sunset photos and create lasting memories. We love having the chance to show people a different side of their airport.”
Walk the Runway is a fundraiser supporting the entry of Nelson Airport Emergency Service team members in the 2026 Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge, with all proceeds going to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ. Entry is by donation.
This year, the airport is offering participants the opportunity to pre-book a ride on the double-decker Summer Beach Bus to and from the event, with pick-ups and drop-offs available in central Nelson and Tāhunanui. Seats are strictly limited and must be pre-booked online, with bus tickets available by donation.
Other transport options include biking, with bike storage facilities available near the assembly point, and free parking for participants.
