Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland has secured hosting rights for the 30th Annual Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Conference (MICCAI 2027) — the world’s leading forum for medical imaging, robotic surgery and image-guided intervention, where artificial intelligence is driving rapid transformation in healthcare.
The event, to be held at the New Zealand International Convention Centre from Sunday, September 26 to Friday, October 1, 2027, is expected to attract nearly 3000 international delegates and generate an estimated $5.7 million in economic impact and 15,500 visitor nights.
The successful bid was led by Associate Professor Jichao Zhao from the Auckland Bioengineering Institute at the University of Auckland, in partnership with Professor Terry Peters from the Roberts Research Institute at Western University, Canada, with support from the Auckland Convention Bureau (a division of Tātaki Auckland Unlimited) and Tourism New Zealand Business Events.
Associate Professor Zhao, who will serve as general chair for MICCAI 2027, says the conference will explore how AI technologies are reshaping modern healthcare.
“AI-driven medical technologies are no longer futuristic concepts – they’re becoming vital tools for resource-constrained health systems,” he says. “From faster, automated diagnoses to image-guided robotics, these innovations are helping clinicians reach patients who might otherwise face delays or limited access to care.
“MICCAI 2027 will bring together world leaders to explore emerging technologies and tackle pressing health equity challenges across the Pacific and beyond.”
Auckland mayor Wayne Brown says the event reinforces the city’s position as a growing innovation hub.
“This is another great win for Auckland,” he says. “It aligns with local and national innovation strategies, including the Auckland Innovation and Technology Alliance, and will help strengthen international ties, attract talent and highlight Auckland’s leadership in health-tech.”
Auckland Convention Bureau head Ken Pereira says MICCAI’s 2027 theme — From the Pacific to the World: Driving MICCAI’s Impact Toward Equitable Healthcare — reflects Auckland’s diverse research culture and growing health innovation sector.
“We’re thrilled to have secured MICCAI 2027,” he says. “The theme speaks directly to Auckland’s strengths and our ability to host global discussions that matter — both scientifically and socially.”
The conference will include keynote presentations, clinical sessions, thematic workshops and cultural programmes, culminating in research institute visits and interactive demonstrations on the final day.
NZICC general manager Prue Daly says hosting MICCAI aligns with the venue’s mission to foster collaboration and innovation.
“We’re honoured to host MICCAI 2027 at the NZICC,” she says. “It’s a perfect fit with our vision of being a hub for global knowledge exchange, and we look forward to welcoming delegates from around the world to experience Auckland’s hospitality.”
Aotearoa New Zealand researchers have contributed to MICCAI since its inception and are developing the 2027 programme to highlight health equity, traditional care practices, and technological solutions that serve Māori, Pacific and other underrepresented communities.
